Claim Evaluation

Every claim is stated exactly, traced to its origin, and evaluated against the best supporting and the best opposing case. Scientific claims must expose their full reasoning chain — observation, measurement, calculation, prediction, physical test, result, replication — and declare per-model predictions BEFORE the result is shown. Appeals to authority (“science says”, “experts agree”, “the math proves it”, “settled”) are not evidence. Confidence is authored, not tallied. Preserve disagreement rather than force a conclusion.

  • Gleason's 1892 map is patented as a north-polar azimuthal-equidistant projection

    Supported

US Patent 497,917 describes Gleason's map construction as an azimuthal-equidistant projection centered at the north pole.

Origin: US Patent and Trademark Office, patent 497,917 (1893).

    Best supporting case

The patent text itself describes the construction (equal linear scale of meridians from the pole). Modern d3-geo azimuthal-equidistant reproduces the same coastline geometry at matching scale.

    Best opposing case

No credible opposing case on the patent's own text. Some interpret the map as a literal cosmological chart; that is a separate claim, not a patent-text claim.

    Evidence

    Circular-reasoning check

No circular-reasoning risks identified in the authored evidence chain.

    Hidden assumptions

    • The 1892 image and the 1893 patent describe the same construction (they do; the patent post-dates print).

    Missing evidence

    • Original printing plates would strengthen provenance; none currently traced.

    Contradictions

    — none recorded —

    Reproducibility

    • Directly reproducible: render coastlines in any d3-geo build with azimuthal-equidistant centered at 90°N.

    Confidence · high

The claim is grammatically about the patent's own words plus a geometric reproduction. Both are directly checkable; nothing is inferred about the earth itself.

Confidence is authored, not tallied. It reflects primary vs. secondary evidence, source independence, methodology, conflicts, and reproducibility — not the count of sources.

  • The Gleason map's coastline geometry matches an azimuthal-equidistant projection of a spherical earth

    Supported

The observed coastline layout on Gleason's 1892 map is consistent with — not evidence against — a north-polar azimuthal-equidistant projection of a spherical earth.

Origin: Direct comparison in this lab's Projection view.

    Best supporting case

Rendering Natural Earth coastlines under a modern d3-geo azimuthal-equidistant centered on 90°N produces the same continental placement Gleason shows.

    Best opposing case

One could argue the projection is a literal chart of a flat earth. That interpretation is a separate cosmological claim not decided by the projection identity.

    Evidence

    Circular-reasoning check

No circular-reasoning risks identified in the authored evidence chain.

    Hidden assumptions

    • The comparison assumes Natural Earth 1:110m is an accurate coastline at that scale — it is, within documented tolerances.
    • The comparison establishes projection identity only, not cosmology.

    Missing evidence

    • A pixel-accurate georeferenced overlay of the archival scan against the d3 render, with explicit control points and residuals.

    Contradictions

    — none recorded —

    Reproducibility

    • Directly reproducible in the Projection Lab.

    Confidence · moderate

The math is straightforward, but a rigorously georeferenced overlay would move this from moderate to high.

Confidence is authored, not tallied. It reflects primary vs. secondary evidence, source independence, methodology, conflicts, and reproducibility — not the count of sources.

  • The United Nations emblem depicts a north-polar azimuthal-equidistant projection

    Supported

The map inside the UN emblem is a north-polar azimuthal-equidistant projection framed by olive branches.

Origin: UN emblem specification, WIPO 6ter registry.

    Best supporting case

The UN's own emblem description names the projection type. The emblem's use is heraldic — a design choice, not a cosmological claim.

    Best opposing case

Some argue the choice of projection is evidence of an institutional cosmology. That is an inference about intent, not about the emblem's geometric identity.

    Evidence

    Circular-reasoning check

    • Treats agreement among institutions as physical evidence

    Hidden assumptions

    • That an organization's emblem reflects its factual worldview. The emblem was designed as a heraldic device.

    Missing evidence

    • Meeting minutes or design memos that would explain why the projection was chosen over alternatives.

    Contradictions

    — none recorded —

    Reproducibility

    • Directly checkable against the emblem image.

    Confidence · high

The narrow claim (what projection the emblem depicts) is settled by the emblem's own specification. Broader claims about intent are separate.

Confidence is authored, not tallied. It reflects primary vs. secondary evidence, source independence, methodology, conflicts, and reproducibility — not the count of sources.

  • Southern-hemisphere long-haul flight times distinguish between competing world models

    Plausible

The observed scheduled block times for SYD↔SCL, JNB↔PER, and AKL↔EZE distinguish between a spherical earth and a Gleason-flat cosmology.

Origin: Popular map-model debates; verified endpoints via OurAirports.

    Best supporting case

Great-circle distances on a mean-radius sphere plus published block times match observed operations at ordinary jet cruise speeds.

    Best opposing case

The observation only cuts between models after a specific competing projection's distance calculation is stated. Absent that, block times are consistent with both by assumption.

      Error sources / limits
Airport reference point vs. runway threshold: <2 km, negligible at 10^4 km scale.
    3. calculation Mathematical calculation

      Great-circle distance via haversine on a mean-radius sphere R = 6371.0088 km.

      Procedure
      d = 2R · asin(√(sin²(Δφ/2) + cos φ₁ cos φ₂ sin²(Δλ/2))).

Uses a spherical earth assumption. This is not independent evidence for a sphere; it is a prediction FROM the sphere model.

    4. prediction Mathematical calculation

At 800–900 km/h ground speed the great-circle distance divides into a block time consistent with published schedules (~12–14 h depending on winds).

    5. physical test Direct observation

Board the flight or track it with ADS-B; record wheels-up and touchdown timestamps; compare to schedule window.

    6. result Raw measurement

Public schedule windows fall inside the sphere-model prediction band. A Gleason-projection distance for the same endpoints has not been supplied for direct numerical comparison in this record.

    7. replication Testimony

Multiple carriers over multi-year windows repeat the operation. Independent ADS-B archives (e.g. FlightRadar24, ADS-B Exchange) would strengthen this — not yet ingested here.

      Independent replication

    Record a southern long-haul with ADS-B($25–$120 total)

    Equipment

    • RTL-SDR USB receiver (~$25)
    • 1090 MHz antenna
    • PC or Raspberry Pi running dump1090 or readsb

    Record

    • Raw Mode-S/ADS-B messages
    • Receiver clock offset vs. NTP
    • Local weather during observation

    Steps

    1. Set up receiver with clear view of the sky along the expected track.
    2. Log all Mode-S messages for the flight window.
    3. Extract position reports (ICAO24, lat, lon, timestamp) into CSV.
    4. Plot the raw track on any map projection you choose without projecting the earth model into the raw lat/lon values.
    5. Compare integrated distance against the haversine prediction AND against any distance formula the opposing model supplies.

    Safety

    • Antenna placement — follow local electrical and roof safety codes.

    Confounding factors

    • Aircraft may deviate for weather, ATC, wind optimization.
    • ADS-B position itself is computed by the aircraft's GNSS — a globe-assumption pipeline.
    • Refraction and antenna geometry do not affect reported lat/lon, but do affect signal reception windows.

    Confirmation-bias controls

    • Publish raw messages before plotting on any map.
    • Have someone else derive the distance from the raw log without seeing your prediction.
    • Include failed captures and dropouts.

Flat/enclosed predicts: No published quantitative Gleason-metric distance supplied for these endpoints — record raw track without assuming one.

Globe predicts: Track follows a great circle curving south of a rhumb line; integrated distance ≈ published sphere value.

Submit results: Attach the raw CSV, receiver log, and a written protocol via /community-science/submit. Do not upload a processed track without the raw source.

    Circular-reasoning check

    • Uses a model-generated value as if it were raw evidence

    Hidden assumptions

    • A specific cruise-speed band.
    • A specific competing projection's distance formula is stated before the observation is treated as decisive.

    Missing evidence

    • Point-by-point ADS-B tracks for the same routes to remove reliance on schedule pages.
    • A written derivation of the Gleason-projection distance between the same endpoints for direct comparison.

    Contradictions

    — none recorded —

    Reproducibility

    • Distances are reproducible via haversine; block times are reproducible from airline schedules for the same window.

    Confidence · moderate

The math holds and the observation is public, but the claim is only decisive once the opposing model's distance is stated explicitly. Preserving that gap is the honest thing to do.

                                          Biblical interpretation

                                          Passage(s): Gen 1:6–8; Isa 40:22; Job 26:7; 1 Sam 2:8; Prov 8:27; Ps 104:5; Rev 7:1

Translation: Compare Masoretic (Hebrew) and Septuagint (Greek) alongside a widely-used English translation (e.g. ESV, KJV). Do not rely on English alone.

Literary context: Genesis 1: liturgical creation narrative. Isaiah 40: prophetic-poetic. Job 26: poetic response to Bildad. 1 Samuel 2: Hannah's prayer, poetic. Psalms/Proverbs: wisdom/liturgical. Revelation: apocalyptic imagery.

Original-language notes: Hebrew 'raqia' (רָקִיעַ) is used elsewhere for a beaten metal expanse. 'Chug' (חוּג) denotes a circle, compass, or circuit — used in Isa 40:22, Prov 8:27, Job 22:14 — and no cited lexicon (BDB, HALOT) defines it as 'sphere.' The distinct noun 'kaddur' (כַּדּוּר), 'ball,' is used by the same prophet in Isa 22:18, showing that ball-language was available and was not chosen in Isa 40:22. Commentators (Rashi, Ibn Ezra, Calvin) disagree on the cosmological implications, but the lexical meaning of chug remains circular, not spherical.

What the passage explicitly states: That God created the heavens and the earth, that God spans/sits above/circumscribes them, and that the earth's stability is God-ordained. The physical three-dimensional shape is not explicitly asserted in any single passage.

What requires interpretation: Whether raqia is solid, whether chug ha-aretz refers to a flat circular Earth, the visible horizon/circuit, or is merely compatible with a globe (compatibility is not explicit description), and whether pillars/foundations are load-bearing structures or covenantal language.

                                          Major interpretive positions

                                          • Ancient-Near-East accommodation: text uses the cosmology of its human authors; theological content survives cosmological updating.
                                          • Literal flat cosmology: raqia is a solid dome, chug is a flat disc, and pillars are physical supports; no accommodation.
                                          • Phenomenological literalism: language describes appearances from the observer's viewpoint without asserting a physical model.
